2008 BMW M3
The fourth-generation BMW M3 debuted in 2007 on an entirely redesigned platform. The new E9x chassis boasted an impressive 4.0L V8, mated to either a manual transmission or a DCT, and an increased focus on implementing weight-saving materials. The M3 coupe, first previewed at the 2007 Geneva Motor Show, featured an unpainted carbon-fiber roof to showcase BMW's dedication to lightening their performance vehicles, which would also become available on their production models. Critics and consumers alike adored the redesigned M3, famously making it the car to beat for BMW's competition. It was even called "the greatest all-around car in the world" by Edmunds writer Mike Magrath. BMW ditched the old inline-6 for a new, specially designed 4.0L V8 and mated it to a 6-speed manual transmission (though a DCT became available in 2008), which resulted in a driving experience unmatched by anything at a similar price point. While most M3s were ordered with an automatic DCT transmission after their introduction in 2008, this M3 sedan still allows the driver to shift gears himself.
