The classic BMC Mini was introduced in 1959 under the Morris and Austin names and took the world by storm throughout the following decade. A simple design in an economical package appealed to all walks of British life. The Mini quickly became a pop culture icon in its own right with notable purchases by celebrities and appearances in feature films. It was eventually voted the second most influential car of the 20th century. Over the years, the shape of the BMC Mini became so instantly recognizable that it was registered as a trademark in its own right. To this day, the Mini is a nostalgic icon of British industry and culture with an unmistakable design and enjoyable driving dynamics. While its design brought it into the spotlight, the Mini made a name for itself on track as well. Later models, including the Cooper S, were praised for their punchy performance and superb handling characteristics. The combination allowed the diminutive Mini to punch well above its weight class in on-track and rally competitive formats. Between its good looks, fun dynamics, and small stature, the Mini was the perfect answer to the VW Beetle and, in many ways, dethroned the “people’s car.”
This 1966 Austin Cooper S was built in November 1965 and delivered in California the following month. It retains its original color combination of Tartan Red with a contrasting black roof over a Red and Gold Brocade interior. It is a fantastic example of the chassis and features significant mechanical improvements to increase outright performance and handling capabilities. The Cooper S significantly improved upon the power output of the base Austin Mini, introducing a variety of engine options and upgrades. This '66 Cooper S is powered by a big-bore A+ 1275cc engine sourced from a 1973 Austin Cooper. It has been further enhanced with an SU HIF44 carburetor, Pertronix electronic ignition, a Flame Thrower distributor, roller tip rockers, upgraded sparkplugs, and a new Maniflow exhaust system. The result is significantly higher power output from stock. A Hi-Lo adjustable suspension kit with Bilstein B4 shocks keep the car planted, while Yokohama Advan A302Rs wrapped around 10"x5" Mini Lite wheels provide more than enough grip for the most technical roads. Stopping is handled by 7.5" front discs, EBC Ultramax HD pads, and upgraded rear drum brakes. The result is a perfectly sorted Cooper S that builds upon the performance and sublime handling characteristics that earned the Austin Mini such admiration among enthusiasts.
