1963 Shelby Cobra 289
There may be no automobile in the history of sports and racing cars more iconic than the 289 Cobra. Carroll Shelby’s racing dominance and designing brilliance, his creation of the Cobra Coupe, his deep involvement in the GT40, and ultimately his spearheading of the LeMans wins in 1966, ’67 and ’68 puts every car he built in the stratosphere of desirability.
289 Cobra chassis #2215 is well documented from new up to the present day by the Cobra Registry. It received its one and only restoration back in 1975 when owned by marque expert Mr. Bill Kemper. One of the fenders sustained damage and, not uncommon in the day, rather than do expensive aluminum repair, Kemper ordered a complete new aluminum skin from AC Cars Ltd. in England (for $1600!). Kemper painted the fresh body red (originally black) and that paint is still on the car today and shows beautifully. The registry also indicates that the engine was replaced in 1972 by then owner Mr. Ralston with a correct Ford 289 HiPo unit. The casting number shows it to be a 1963 engine. This was not unusual in the day as these cars tended to be driven hard and correct, replacement HiPo crate motors were readily available. Of note, the trunk, engine lid and door latches all retain their original ID stampings.
2215 has been owned by serious collectors and enthusiasts its entire life and is shows in its condition both mechanically and cosmetically. We’ve undertaken a complete inspection of the car and have taken numerous road tests and the car is spot on, ready today to be enjoyed by its next lucky custodian.
