1954 Volvo 444
Automotive Restorations is proud to offer this 1954 Volvo 444 that is as much at home on the unpaved roads of La Carrera Panamerica as it is on track at Lime Rock Park. Built by our in-house racing team, Vintage Racing Services, this Volvo comes with an extensive list of modifications. The build began with a custom-made wide-body includes front fenders, trunk, and hood. The fenders house 15"x7" Panasport aluminum-alloy wheels while the fiberglass hood and trunk reduce overall weight. A race-built Volvo B-20 engine with dual Weber 45DCOE carburetors sends power to the rear wheels through a Tremec T-5 close-ratio 5-speed transmission. The engine benefits from a Mallory ignition, Stahl headers, a custom aluminum radiator, and an oil cooler. The transmission has been modified with a custom overdriven final gear and a single plate rally clutch, while the rear end has been replaced with a limited-slip differential. Koni adjustable shocks with rear coilovers keep the Volvo well-planted while Willwood disc brakes at all four corners quickly bring the car to a stop. Safety equipment includes a full roll cage built to La Carrera specifications, OMP racing seats, a fire suppression system, and an 18-gallon Fuel Safe Fuel cell. The cockpit is also equipped with a Brontz rally computer, fully rally instrumentation, and a rear-mounted dual battery system. The Volvo's total dry weight is 960kg. This is a three-owner car and was purpose-built for Bill Shanahan, famous rally car owner and driver. In 1997 this car took first in class (Turismo Produccion) and 5th overall. The car has competed in La Carrera a total of 10 times.
